Mobile computing refers to using small and portable computing devices in the wireless enabled network that provides wireless connections to a central main server. These devices include laptops, notebooks, Tablet PCs, palmtops, personal digital assistant (PDA), and other hand held devices. A radio signalling device is installed inside these units for the reception and transmission of electronic data.
Wireless networks use Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) technology to deliver network coverage offices, public places and other small jobs. A wireless access point device is used to give wire free network coverage in the defined area. An access point device that is built on 802 .11b and 802.11 g, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standards, transfers data at 2.4 GHz devices to comply with the 802 .11A standards shall transmit at 5 GHz.
WiMax (wireless interoperability for Microwave Access) technology represents the next generation of wireless networks and can transfer data up to a distance of 48 km it can provide a networking speed of seventy Mbps. it gives much better than Wi-Fi facilities such as the higher bandwidth and high data security through enhanced encryption schemes. It can provide service in both the Line Of Sight (LOS) and non-Line Of Sight (NLOS) locations, but the range can vary accordingly. WiMax supports multiple communication protocols and can serve as the backbone network for an ISP (Internet service provider), as well as telecom provider.
Mobile computing devices can use any of these network access to the Internet, or connect to a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) server. They use the networking software to adjust device settings that match the specific network requirements.
Mobile computing has enabled users to stay connected on the go. High end users can select satellite based network that provides wireless connectivity anywhere in the world. This technology is expensive and will take many years to be as affordable as WiFi and WiMax.
